• Entry #1 - The most famous Homophone

    Greetings diciple!

To those of you who are unsure of what that big word in the title of this entry means, I am here to elaborate. A homophone is any two, or more, words that sound the same in pronunciation but differ in meaning and diction. A good example of this would be RAISE, meaning to bring upwards, and RAZE, meaning to eradicate. They sound the same, but they are different.

Now, if you spend any time on a heinous hellhole of an app that used to have a blue bird as its icon but now is of one of the many letters in the English alphabet, wink wink, You've likely noticed spelling errors. People constantly use the wrong words and pronouns in cases where it would be so wrong to do so, mostly because they're uneducated.

My favorite example of this issue is using a homophone that involves three words, something that you should have probably learned back in middle school but apparently everyone missed due to a sick day.

Of course I'm talking about the difference between THERE, THEIR, and THEY'RE.

THERE is used to describe a place or distance. It is often used without any other adjectives and is substituted for any actual details on location. One may say, "I left my pecil over THERE," using body language to gesture, "right on that table!" where they follow it up with further details in a seperate clause.

THEIR is a possesive pronoun. It is used to describe something that belongs to an indivdual. It is the possesive form of THEY. One could tell another that, "That pencil is THEIR's, so dont take it!" In which they use THEIR to describe an objects relation to a person, despite the fact that no blood has been shared.

THEY'RE is a contraction of THEY and ARE, seperated by an apostrophe. Can't, we've, he's, are all examples of the same phenomena. It is used as the begining to a description most often. One could say, "THEY'RE so dumb with their pencil, they can't even write correctly!" If you do not enjoy contractions for whatever reason, it can just be subsituted by THEY ARE and still be valid.

If you are going to rant about something you dont understand, at least use the proper language and diction. For gods sake.
