• Guide: Windows Quick Conect to Glitchnet

From Tar to All on Wed Mar 27 16:18:53 2024
    hie all,

this post is meant as a guide to windows users on how to make a shortcut to connect to the GlitchNet BBS, as well as how to make it look pretty when you connect.

Step 1: install the windows terminal app.

go to the microsoft store (either web or app) and download the app called "Windows Terminal Preview".
this is a really nice app that lets you have multiple customizable tabs in a single window. you can have cmd.exe open, powershell, and even the BBS connection (that we'll make later) open at the same time.

Step 2: creating the GlitchNet terminal profile

press the arrow on the top bar and open settings.

then, on the left, scroll down to the bottom of the profiles and press "Add a new profile".

when it asks you to duplicate a profile, duplicate a powershell profile (or a command prompt one if you have to).

rename it to whatever you want, I went with "GlitchNet".

change the "Command line" to "ssh YOUR_USERNAME@glitchtech.top -p 2222", without the quotes, and filling in your username

if you want, change the "Icon" setting to the glitchtech website favicon (email me an i will send you the .png file)

to make this profile distunguishable from others, change the "Tab title" to whatever you want. I went with "GlitchNet" again.

    now open the "Appearance" settings.

pick a "Color scheme" you like, i went with "Campbell".

pick your desired font (note that many wont be compatible with certain characters on the BBS), i used the "Ac437 IBM PCG" font (again, email me to get the font files).

set the desired font size, i HIGHLY reccomend size 16 if youre using the IBM font from me.

if you're using the IBM font, set the "Line height" to 1.2. otherwise, mess with this setting until it look right on your font.

if desired, turn on "Retro terminal effects". they look great, but are kinda hard to read, so i left them off.

change the cursor shape to "Filled box" to match the terminal standard.

    Step 3: creating a shortcut

this part isnt necessary, but i find it convenient.

make a folder somewhere to keep the bat file thatll open the window

    create a batfile, i named mine "glitchnet.bat"

write the following in that file: wt new-tab --profile "YOUR_PROFILE_NAME_HERE"

make sure to fill in the profile name with what you did before.

now were gonna make the shortcut

right-click on the bat file you made and press "Create shortcut". you might need to press "Show more options" before the option will show up.

    navigate to "C:/Users/YOUR_USERNAME_HERE/AppData/Roaming/Microsoft/Windows/Start Menu/Programs".

make a new folder, name it whatever youd like, i went with "GlitchNet".

place the shortcut you made earlier in this folder.

if you want, you can add the glitchtech website favocon as the shortcut's icon.

to do that, go into the shortcut's properties

    press the "Shortcut" tab

    press "Change Icon..."

ask me for the .ico file through email or procure your own.

you could even pin the shortcut, for extra instant access.

Step 4: revel in the convenience of your new shortcut

to connect, you can run the ~ultra convenient~ shortcut through the start menu (the thing that opens when you press the windows button)

alternatively, you can open the connection by selecting the profile you made in the dropdown at the top in the windows terminal app.

i hope this helped someone. this was quite a fun project.
im still trying to figure out a way to join without typing in your password (if only sysop would add ssh key support *sigh*)

    mmhmm
    bie all
