For context, the text being analyzed was a segment of Barbara Bush's commencement speech at some college.
I answered Question #1 by stating that Barbara Bush was mostly concerned with identifying skills that are useful for adapting during "uncertain times" in the excerpt from her commencement speech (College Board 1). The "review explanation" states that this understanding was incorrect in that it only considered the end of the excerpt. It argues that, while much of her speech did center around dealing with "uncertain times," the advice in the beginning of the speech was before the idea was brought up (College Board 1). Thus the overall concern of the passage is better described as offering advice for the future. While I do see the argument made in the answer explanation, I argue that all three of the choices that Bush lists, "believe[ing] in something larger than yourself," including joy in all parts of your life, and "cherish[ing] your human connections," were included as advice for adjusting during a "transitional period" (Bush 3-8). Supporting my argument, the answer to Question #6 states that
"the author's exigence in the passage" is "the question of how to lead a meaningful life 'in a transitional period'" (College Board 1). This means that the entire reason that Bush wrote this speech was because of the "uncertain times" (College Board 1). With that established, does it not make more sense for Bush to have been concerned mostly with offering advice for adapting in uncertain times?
Pretty good essay amirite?
