• Coffee and the Web

    Ahoy meverett,

Apologies for my typical passive-aggresive help desk behaviour. It will not change for as long as you know me.

I prefer my coffee black and scalding hot, so I can suffer as I drink it.

I have some very traditionalist views on the web that stem from a history of disappointing experiences. Here are my commandments.

    1. Never break user compatability/workflow. Torvalds was a big fan of this one. Basically, once you make something people can use, and you put it out for anyone to see, assume anyone could be using it. Never, ever, break it without due warning or reason. If you do break it, it's your responsibility to drop everything and fix it. Maybe I'll share some stories on this one.

    2. Be open to archival. This goes hand-in-hand with my open source policy, but if you put something on the internet, you do so with full consent that anyone may archive or track your content for private or public reasons. The internet is very literally the public domain. As sites gain traffic, wayback machine, google, and greenturtle537 will all begin to crawl and track them, putting up dummies for their own use along the way.

    3. Never dismantle or migrate a site without due process. I understand that people may come upon hard times without warning or lose access to their providers and content, but do you know how annoying it is to be tracking down the most obscure documentation and see the page "Content not found." Always be sure to build onto what you've already created. If necessary, use protocols like url forwarding to ensure that users can always find what was previously there. This is very much an extension of rule 1 and yes I have stories about it.

Hope you get that image working eventually,

^ good points you make here, guess this means the pi official stays on forever now

i don't have an issue with archival and stuff like that i was just caught very off guard last night

Hope you get that image working eventually,

maybe! i've decided that i'm redoing the entire thing with i suppose means the old stuff stays up until the new stuff is ready, but that's alright

i spent a solid 4 hours last night achieving like 3 small details unfortunately though so i might actually be spending all weekend on this

    we'll see!

thanks for the tips and pointers
